When we study an animal, we describe its surroundings as its habitat - its home. The other living and non living things sharing that same area make up an ecosystem - each 'thing' is interconnected. The type of land and climate this area belongs to is known as a biome. We divide the Earth up into biomes. These include:
Ecosystems vary in size and can be as small as a puddle or as large as a forest. Any group of living and nonliving things interacting with one and other can be considered as an ecosystem. It's the way nature works together - a ecosystem can include things such as ants, anteater, soil, trees, forest and sun. When we study the relationship between living and non living things within a particular biome or in a smaller part of that biome, we are studying the ecosystem.
